Preparing for Your Termite Inspection:

While it is called a “Termite Inspection” it is officially a “Wood Destroying Insect Inspection.” In addition to termites, we will also be looking for Carpenter Ants, Carpenter Bees and Wood Destroying Beetles. We’ll also make note of any earth to wood contact that can lead to termite or wood destroying insect infestation or damage.

Things you can do to prepare for a termite inspection:

» Remove any storage from under the sinks in the kitchens / bathrooms.
» Remove any storage from the area within two feet of the exterior of the house.
» Remove any storage in the interior of the garage two feet away from the wall.
» Trim bushes or ground cover that conceals the walls or foundation.
» If your home is built on a raised foundation, the inspector will go under the house. Be sure the access opening to this area is not blocked by storage. If the access opening is located in the floor of a closet, please pull back the carpet and leave the door to the closet open.
» If you are not going to be home, be sure to unlock the gates and arrange to have any dogs stay with a friend or neighbor.

Frequently Asked Questions About Termite Inspections in New Jersey

Why do I need a termite inspection? Many lenders  or mortgage companies require it, so they can be sure there are no termite infestations in the homes they finance. If you’re buying, you want to be sure to protect your investment by not buying a home with termites and/or  termite damage.

How long does the inspection take? What’s involved? Usually, it takes less than an hour. An experienced termite inspector from TermiGuard Pest Services will check the house thoroughly, from foundation to attic. Our termite inspectors knows exactly where to look for signs of termites or other wood destroying insects, and at the same time will note any damage.

Termites won’t attack a new house, will they? Unfortunately, they have been known to. Termites can infest the wood members that houses are built with while they lay in the dirt at construction sites. TermiGuard Pest Services regularly treats (or pre-treats) new construction homes to avoid new-home termite infestations. Even brand new homes have tiny gaps and voids that termite can fit through. It only takes 1/64″ gap for our New Jersey Termites to infiltrate and start wreaking havoc on your home.

How do subterranean termites get into a house? It is very easy for termites. They may enter directly from the soil, or they may build airtight tubes leading from their colony in the soil to the wood of your house. They usually commute daily between the wood and their colony.

What if no evidence of termites is found? You will receive a New Jersey Termite Certification stating that no visible evidence of termites and other wood destroying insects were found in the accessible areas that were inspected. Homes in New Jersey should be inspected periodically, especially if neighboring homes show signs of termites.

Are there other wood destroying insects besides termites? Yes. Besides the most common termite – the subterranean – there are other kinds of termites, as well as carpenter bees, carpenter ants and wood destroying beetles. Our inspectors know how to identify them and treat for them.

What if the inspection shows termites or other wood destroying insects are present? In most cases, New Jersey home owners are responsible for the termite or wood destroying insect treatment. If termite evidence or wood destroying insect evidence is found, they will either need to have the property treated or prove that have had it treated. If they have had the property treated, the treating company should be able to provide the necessary termite certification needed for mortgage.

Will my family have to leave home while you treat for termites? No. Although the termite treatment may be noisy, subterranean termites can be controlled while the house is occupied. Again, our termite inspectors will carefully explain whatever procedures are necessary.

Will there be an odor? No, TermiGuard Pest Services uses Termidor®, an odor-free method of termite control as well as the Advance Termite Baiting System that is also odor-free.

If a treatment is needed, what is the cost? Costs vary widely, and no meaningful answer can be given until the inspection is completed, the size and structure of the home determined, and other factors are assessed. It is important to remember, however, that the cost of termite treatment is minor when compared to the equity and investment represented in a home.

Can I do it myself? Unless you are licensed in the State of New Jersey, the answer is no. Only a New Jersey licensed pest control company can provide the necessary wood destroying insect certification that you’ll need for mortgage (if a mortgage is involved). Besides, it’s not really practical, since special equipment and application techniques are required. Thoroughly trained and experienced personnel with the necessary skills must be used to do the job properly.

What if there already is extensive damage? If the damage threatens the soundness or appearance of the structure, it must be repaired. This is a specialized type of work and must be repaired by a licensed contractor.

What does an inspector look for during a termite inspection? A full termite inspection is technically a “Wood Destroying Insect Inspection”. Your termite inspector inspector will be looking for visible evidence of all wood destroying insects that are present here in New Jersey. Some other things your termite inspector will look for are: wood boring beetles, carpenter ants, carpenter bees, water damage or water rot, dry rot, standing water, earth to wood contact and any conditions that are conducive to wood destroying insect infestations.
